EPDM Roofing – Learning the Basics

EPDM roofing is an excellent choice for flat roofs. This is a single layer roofing material that is made of synthetic rubber. EPDM is an abbreviation for ethylene propylene diene monomer. This exceptional type of roofing resists all the moisture thrown at it by snow and rain. It is also not affected by extremely hot and cold temperatures. These roofing membranes will also hold up well—they will not crack or tear over time. It is also extremely flexible and can stretch to up to 300% of its original size, making it a nice choice for homes with a great deal of roof space to cover.

The concept behind EPDM roofing is not new. The rubber membranes have been used to roof houses in America since the 1960s and many of these original roofs are still on homes now. Laboratory tests that have been conducted on the membranes, as well as real world use, suggest that they will last well over fifty years if properly installed. This is proven to be a very reliable roofing method. Over one billion square metres of this durable roofing have been installed worldwide. These roofs also require no special maintenance in order to last the full fifty years that they are guaranteed for.

Both private homes and commercial buildings can have EPDM roofing installed. The installation process does not require asphalt or any flames, so there is no risk of fire to your property. This roofing also allows for a faster installation than standard roofing does, which will mean less inconvenience and distraction to the homeowner. This is due in part to the use of larger rolls of the rubber material, which means there is a need for fewer seams. These roofing membranes can also be installed year-round, which is good news if you need to have your roof replaced in the winter.

EPDM roofing is environmentally friendly, but its installation does require some chemical accessories. Regular hardware-type accessories are also required, as well as pressure sensitive adhesive objects. Insulation may need to be upgraded when a new EPDM roof is installed, depending on building regulations. Although these rubber membrane roofs are very sturdy in wet conditions, they cannot be installed on a wet surface. Any snow, ice, frost, or standing water must be cleared away prior to installation. Proper maintenance before the roofers arrive will ensure the roof is replaced in a timely, safe manner.
