Roofing Membranes – The Basics

Traditionally, flat roof coverings have consisted of an amalgamation of felt and tar. However, these days, people are choosing EPDM roofing membranes to cover their flat roofs. Whether you have an existing flat roof which needs replacing or a completely new roof, this type of material will ensure that your flat roof will be leak free for years to come. The weather is unpredictable and, over a year, can go from extreme cold to heat, dry to extremely wet. Roofing membranes will ensure that no weather conditions will pass through the material and into your home.
Roofing membranes are typically made from a derivative of PVC plastic or a strong, high quality rubber EPDM. This latter material is designed to last at least fifty years without deterioration and is not as expensive as you may imagine. It is completely resilient to all types of weather conditions and temperatures. The hottest summers and harshest winters have no adverse effect on this material. Even if joins are required, the seams will be equally durable as the main part of the membrane.
Traditionally, the main places leaks develop on flat roofs are around the seams and joints, particularly when there is standing water. Seams and joints tend to be the most vulnerable points with traditional materials. This is not a problem when using rubber membranes. The material is flexible enough to fit round all roofing contours and any seams and edges will be impenetrable by water. The roofing membranes are so strong and tough that you can even walk on it without any chance of damage.
Unlike traditional roof materials, roofing membranes are installed without any heat or flames, making it quick, easy and safe. The flexible material will easily bend round all the contours of your flat roof. Once installed correctly, rain will rebound off the material, leaving your home or commercial building completely dry internally. Therefore, if you need a new roof covering, roofing membranes is certainly a great, affordable option which will withstand the elements for years.
