EPDM Material – Using EPDM Roofing Material
EPDM material is a type of rubber roofing that is used in various different kinds of situations. The acronym EPDM stands for Ethylene Propylene Diene and Monomer. It is a kind of compound that is used in roofing as well as other industries such as aviation and motor vehicles due to its sealing abilities in extreme situations. When manufacturers use this kind of material they do so in areas where vehicles experience extreme vibrations and in situations where there can be extremely high or low temperatures. Because of this material’s high threshold for heat and cold, it is ideal for situations where hot water, steam or hot engine parts may come into contact with another area. It is also ideal for use in shock absorbers and other areas where there is extreme vibration or motion. Because of its rare durability properties, this material is also used in roofing.
Over time, EPDM material has become a large part of the roofing business, most notably in areas such of flat roofing. The material is fabricated into sheets and rolled out over the roof area. This kind of a material can help protect a roof without cracking or becoming damaged due to the change in weather.
Another advantage to using EPDM material, especially in flat roof construction, is in its ability to create a waterproof seal to protect a roof deck from standing water. Flat roofs tend to collect water in spots because the water has a restricted fall reducing the water running off the roof. Traditional roofing materials tend to break down when there is a lot of standing water in any section of the roof. But this material will be able to protect the flat roof from standing water and prevent roof damage.
As was mentioned previously, EPDM material does not break down when it is exposed to water, heat, cold, snow and ice.
