DIY Roofing – How to Find Trouble Spots
Some people let the roof on their home get into such bad condition that there’s no alternative except to have a new one installed, but DIY roofing doesn’t have to be a difficult prospect. You have to know the types of materials you’ll need in order to do the repairs, and how to install everything properly for durability and so that it will stand up to extreme weather conditions. You need to know how to do repairs yourself before they become major projects. You should also know how to waterproof your roof and make it fully weather tight, especially if you live in a climate that’s especially harsh during the winter months.
DIY roofing skills may include learning how to find a leak before it does any major damage. You should inspect the entire roof and look for any signs of leakage. If you find a spot where dirt has accumulated, it could indicate that’s a place where water has been pooling and could lead to leaking into your home. You should also inspect the material used on the roof itself. See if there are any splits, cracks, or holes in the material. It’s very important to check the spots where the materials overlap, because there could be some gaps in the overlapped areas that haven’t been sealed properly or cracked due to expansion and contraction of the roof and could be leaking.
Before beginning any DIY roofing project, another thing you should check when doing an inspection of the roof, is the wall flashing. This is one of the most common causes of roof leaks, if it hasn’t been properly installed when the roof was put on. Also look carefully to see if any of the flashing has become damaged. Although leaks can happen anywhere on the roof, it’s most common to find trouble spots around the edges of the roof. Make any necessary material provisions for the flashing before going any further.
DIY roofing mistakes that some people make are improper installation of seam when making repairs to their roof, not installing the roof substrate in a suitable manner, not using adhesives in the correct way or installing the roof in poor weather conditions. If you don’t carry out the installation in the right way, it could make the leaking roof worse. As an extra precaution, you should always wear gloves and safety glasses to protect your eyes while working on your roof.
